![]() ![]() get it?) In some ways similar to a typical RTS (in the same way a tricycle is similar to an M1 Abrams), you designate zones for various activities, such as mining or chopping wood, for fishing, gathering plants, piling wood, making beds, and much, much, more, then designate areas for different purposes, such as bedrooms, and absolutely nothing is simple or without options-the Dwarf Fortress wiki article on bedrooms is almost 3000 words long. Once you’re done with this (you can also accept a default mix of professions and gear), you go on to your first settlement, and that’s where things really get hairy. Of course, what choices you make also depends on the type of region you’ve chosen to settle in, as there are huge variations in the type and quantity of resources. Make the wrong choices here, and you’ll end up being unable to do anything. Of course, you need to equip your dwarves first, and train them, and both involve huge lists of options and items, including everything from kittens to anvils. Then, you and a band of seven dwarves set out. ![]() Sure, after clearing a bit of forest they'll send a representative to limit the number of trees you can cut but it's usually over 100. You really have to go out of your way to cut enough trees to make them angry. This statement is about as useful as “In World War 2, some people had a fight.” First, an entire world, with thousands of years of simulated history, is generated-because you’re likely to be using the same world over and over, as you try to build forts in different places. The biggest thing is trading them wood but that just means they'll pack up and not come back for a year. Nor the arbitrary nature of the AI, like deciding something silly like instead of killing them for being a waste of resources it appoints the unruly individual to sit naked in a glass cage during working hours and do nothing in particular while that person just complains about not having time to pray and how they’re still mad they saw a dead dog last year.In Dwarf Fortress, you control a bunch of dwarves who build a fortress. People just doing what they’re told until they have a desire to not do it, and the invisible leadership trying to placate or trick them into working again before arranging an “accident” using the few innocuous systems it can repurpose is not an idea I can recall anything similar to. The closest comparison would be mad AI fascism in far off futures like in THX1138, but that always comes with punishment being central. This makes the system of government all the more interesting. But not formally, nor do they acknowledge any repercussions stemming from disobeying us whatsoever nor do they attribute these things to our actions and instead take it out on the formal chain of authority and nobility. ![]() Sure, we can dump them in a lava pit, take away all their possessions and tie them to a rock in the middle of a river, force them to kill their loves ones, or any number of other fates. The fact they have no privacy at all in any form and we have the unlimited ability to assign things but no formal ability to punish, threaten, or coerce is interesting though. The latter being something governments do plenty, such as centralizing homeless populations before cracking down or using color and patterns on public places to reduce antisocial behavior. We can’t control their minds, just read them and manipulate externally.
